Burgandine House
803 South Main Street
The Burgandine House is considered the oldest home in
Culpeper, built in 1749 as a log cabin. The landmark now
stands on part of the original Spotswood tract that was sold in
1750 to Robert Coleman, then to General Edward Stevens,
then to Dr. Marcus Black in 1774. According to local lore,
this structure was used as a tavern during the American
Revolution. The house doubled in size during the Victorian
Period, and in 1963 Louise P. Donovan donated one section to
the Town of Culpeper, and later, Elizabeth Burgandine Coons
gave the second lot to the Town. The Culpeper
Historical Society undertook a full restoration of the house in
the early 1990s, and now the house is open daily as part of the
Museum of Culpeper History's public programming.
Adjoining, but not part of the South East Street Historic District, the Museum of Culpeper History has graciously opened this house for your viewing.
